Different styles and outfits require various types of jewelry and accessories. Sometimes these are very easy choices and other times they can be difficult. One thing that can be very difficult about selecting necklaces is knowing how long a necklace should be. The most popular length is 16 to 20 inches which lies at a distance between the collarbone and the throat for most individuals. There are several factors that might go into selecting different necklace lengths. Here are some guidelines to help you work through the process.

Collar Length Necklaces
The collar necklace is between 12 and 14 inches and lies very close to the neck. Many times these are made of multiple strands and are worn with ballet, V-neck or boat style necklines. The collar length necklace is usually worn on occasions which are more elegant in nature. This length works well for those who have a slender neck.

Choker Length Necklaces
The necklace of choker length will be between 15 and 16 inches long. This length is nice for those who do not want something up close to the neckline, but do not want something too long either. Silver or gold name necklaces of choker length are often worn with formal attire. While it’s not best with turtlenecks it can be a versatile option which can help soften an angular chin.

Princess Length Necklaces
A princess length is between 17 and 19 inches and it should sit just below the collarbone. The princess length is one of the most popular lengths worn. In most cases, it is a good length to bear pendants, lockets or charms. It is commonly worn with more formal attire, but can be used to dress up more casual wear.

Matinee Length Necklaces
The matinee length necklace lies between 20 and 24 inches. It’s a good length for professional attire because it can bring a good balance between formal and casual wear. The matinee’s length makes it stand out against solid backgrounds and should not typically be worn with patterns or materials with which it could clash. This length tends to draw the eyes to the chest area so it can be used to accentuate the cleavage when desired.

Opera Length Necklaces
The opera length necklace is between 28 and 34 inches and typically hangs down below the breast area. It is long enough to be doubled so that it can also be worn as a choker. It’s a nice length for outfits with higher necklines, evening wear or formal tops.

Rope and Lariat Length Necklaces
Anything over 45 inches is considered a rope and lariat necklace. A rope style necklace will lie very close to the area around the navel and can be used to make a double strand princess length necklace. It can also be tripled and worn as a collar or choker style necklace. A lariat style necklace is not attached at the ends and this allows for tying it into different types of knots which can make its own style statement.
